Lotusphere from a WebSphere Portal perspective

WebSphere Portal is growing in the ranks of Lotusphere but it still has a long way to go. From an architectural perspective it gave me a lot. I learnt a lot about all the new features in WebSphere Portal 7.0 and some of them require additional work to fully understand. Also being a developer I could have got much more. There is still not enough to make a developer happy. Something to work on for the future.

    My top 3 from LS2011

      1. Kevin Spacey! (And the General Opening Session ...)
A brilliant actor and speaker. Apparently he has also been doing social networking since 2001 with a website for young and upcoming screenwriters and actors. Of course, the opening session was very interesting for a newbie like me, there were several new items as well as panels with fascinating real life implementations of social software.

      2. Show and Tell with Andrew Brew.
Andrew has written an excellent application that draws maps that can be  modified through the web. The application uses JSON and standard web programming for Domino. An excellent example of how domino can be used to enhance a web applikation.

      3. Adminblast with Paul Mooney!
Adminblast is entertaining as well as educational. I must say that this was one of the best sessions I have ever been to, anywhere, anytime. If you go to Lotusphere, this is a must to attend.

Back in cold Sweden again... when looking back on a great week, this is what I will remember the most.

        1. First and most obvious - the whole Lotusphere conference itself! It's a special feeling to just stroll around all day from one session to another with your Starbucks coffee mug and just inhale the atmosphere, learn new stuff and get inspired, nothing beats that!

        2. The great weather - it was well needed to get away from this winter for a week and now, thinking back of the Florida sun, I feel a little less like a frozen vegetable :)

        3. Last but not least - all the nice dinners and activities with great customers, colleagues and friends!

        Lotusphere 2011. Fridas top 3

        1.The sessions – of course.
It is always a lot of great and inspiring sessions. A little less code this year but still very educational.
        2.“The social thing”
IBM was very social this year with the theme for this year’s Lotusphere “Get Social”. But Lotusphere is always a very social event. It is awesome to spend time with wonderful colleagues and customers
        3.The sun
I have to put the big warming yellow thing on my list. The heat is the finishing touch of a magic week.

Lotusphere 2011 recap - Fredrik’s point of view

        Fredrik Söderquist  2011 February 10 13:19:48
        Fredrik Söderquist
So, we're back from the sphere - back to the bitter cold winter in Sweden.
Time to give the LS2011 some recap, what were the top three things, from my point of view, this year?

        1. I managed to complete my session!
A lot of work went in to a mere 20 minute presentation, but it takes a lot of work do to create good content and do a great delivery.
Even though I had practice a lot, it didn't go as well as I wanted. But since no one had heard or seen it before, I think I noticed more of the hiccups than the audience did.
I got some applauses and some great feedback after the session, so all in all I would call my presentation a good achievement!

        2. The Product Showcase and Infoware's booth!
Since I was in the Product Showcase throughout the week, this of course had most of my focus and attention. I think the showcase and booth layout was really great this year, felt open and spacious.
Our booth had a lot of visitors and I was able to interact with people from all over the world. We did a lot of demos of the DomainPatrol product suite and got a great opportunity to spread the word about our DomainPatrol products. In other words, Infoware's participation with a booth @Lotusphere 2011 was a great success!

        3. The weather!
I haven't been to the sphere that many times, this was only my third visit.
But talking to other more experienced Lotusphere visitors the weather this year was the best they've seen in many years.
And even though the weather might not be that important, since you're indoors most of the time, seeing the sun shine and be able to take a break in the sun really gets everyone more energised and enthusiastic!

To sum up Lotusphere 2011 from my point of view, I would like to use the words of Mr Disney and his legacy - It was magical! :)

Viewindex may in the future be able to store out side the nsf, so you dont need to backup viewindexes. Workspaces will still be there in notes next. Delegateing the chair role in calendering is priority. IdeaJam for ideas concerning improvement in notes n domino. Zooming in notes client might come. Heapsizeing can improve preformenses. Hotfixes automated, called hotfixstream. Change location due too ip-range etc. 8.5.2 manage replicas is added. Shut down bar might be added for the client. Server-side java debugger is top priority.

Java API for Lotus Notes 8.5.1 and 8.5.2

A very good session about the Java API for Notes. A lot of demos and code snippets. One of the new API function is that you can execute an already existing agent in the Notes UI. More info from the speakers visit: blog.mindoo.com. For API reference go to the IBM's AppDev wiki.

The Elastic Portal: Farming in the Cloud

                  Daniel Svanström
Portal farming in the cloud. You can easily set up the service to automatically increase the number of farm members as needed when the load increases. This is not a concept, this works and it was demonstrated live in this session.

                    WebSphere Portal Farms

                      Daniel Svanström
There has been a lot if talking about portal farms. This is a new feature in WebSphere 7.0. The concept is that rather than clustering your servers you have a number of standalone servers. You add and remove servers as needed.

                      WebDAV and WCM

                        Daniel Svanström  2011 February 3 17:22:43
                        Daniel Svanström
I talked to one of the WCM developers. I was telling him about versioning and deployment and the fact that portal artifacts and WCM artifacts are not versioned and deployed together. He suggested I should look at the WCM WebDAV interface.

Fredrik’s presentation went really well yesterday. The presentation was well preformed and the session got much appreciated.
A lot of applause from the audience at the end =)

So I got a walkthrough of how installation and various configuration capabilities work in WebSphere Portal 7. There is not much new compared to version 6.1 here. 6.1 administrators will be able to get going in no-time

Basic Concepts Behind Moving to IBM WebSphere Portal 7

This was a good deep-dive into the various scenarios and paths to take in order to migrate to WebSphere Portal 7.0. The most important point is that the migration tools are totally remade compared to the ones used when migrating to version 6.1. This must be good news for anyone running into obstacles migrating to WebSphere Portal 6.1.

Everybody wants to be the top result so there is no easy way around it. There are many don'ts though. Finally we looked at how WebSphere can help when Google comes crawling.

What does not work with Google? • Metadata usage - fields like "keywords" and "description" • Alt tag stuffing - stuff your image alt tag with a lot of words. • Search engine friendly URL - for a crawler if it gets a return 200, then that URL is ok.

Use virtual file system to create and delete design items. Build your own plugins, eclips 3.4.2 is recommended. Use the package explorer to dive in to design elements.
